“Helped by a big head and no neck, the Nuthatch jams seeds and nuts into tree bark then whacks them with their beak to break them open, hence…nut hatchers! A favourite among backyard birds, especially with kids who know it as the “upside-down bird”, the Nuthatch has three toes facing forward and one big toe facing back so they can creep head first down tree trunks in the search for insects.
